Fenton Art Glass Presents. . .
Burmese Basket Internet Special!

Fenton's classic Burmese glass with a Diamond Optic is the perfect canvas
for Kim Barley's vining strawberries and blooms design on this basket.
Kim's lovely handpainted strawberries are surrounded by leaves, blooms
and white polka dot accents. Just 15 baskets were handpainted by
Kim and she signed and numbered each one 1/15, 2/15, 3/15, etc.
Because of the limited quantity available, we request one basket order per household, please.

The Diamond Optic motif begins with a "spot mould" that creates a lattice pattern when the glass is blown into it. Next, the molten glass is allowed to chill briefly before being reheated in a direct fire furnace called a glory hole. During this reheating (called "warming in"), the raised areas of the lattice pattern acquire the pink blush. Finally the glass is blown into another mould that creates the essential shape of the basket. The process of chilling and reheating takes great skill on the part of the glassworkers involved, and years of experience to master this glassmaking art.

Each basket features the basket handler's mark on either side of the handle. This basket has a fine rib twisted handle. The skilled basket handler has about 25 seconds within which he must accomplish the following: attach a glowing ribbon of molten glass to one side of the basket; deftly twist the rapidly cooling glass; stick it to the other side; impress the base of each side of the handle with his handler's mark, and finally, fashion the handle into a graceful arch. The handler's mark is distinctive and identifies the artisan who created the basket. Collectors enjoy adding their favorite basket handler's creations to their collection.

Hobstar Blush Rose Iridized
M42733PHM - $35.00

Fenton Factory Clearance Corner. . .

Made with a mould that originated at the Indiana Glass Co. in the early twentieth century, this 5-1/2" tall vase (approximately 5-7/8'' diameter across the widest part) features an elaborate geometric pattern that resembles cut glass (in fact, that was exactly the intent when this item was made in crystal by Indiana Glass about a century ago!). This item now functions perfectly as a vase, but, a century ago, you could turn it over and use it as the base for a matching punch bowl!

The example you see here is Fenton's Blush Rose glass color, and it's been iridized with a special solution of metallic salts to create lots of added sparkle. This pattern is called Hobstar, and was most recently offered as the base for our 42703P Punch Bowl.

Display this versatile piece as a vase with flowers or add a candle for a sparkling candleholder (shown here).
