Handcrafted in Favrene glass, you'll love the vivid
iridescence of this beautiful 5-1/2'' Melon Covered Candy Box,
which was included in the 2005 Landmark Collection to
celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Fenton Art Glass. Each
Candy Box bottom bears the signature of Nancy Fenton and the
Landmark Collection 1905-2005 backstamp (see photo below). An
additional feature is a delicate white butterfly inside the
lid. We recently asked Robin Spindler to add her creative
touch to this butterfly. . . as you can see from the inset
photo, her gold paint highlights and gem accents are the
perfect complements to the Favrene glass.

As with many handmade glasses,
Fenton's Favrene is not a recent invention. It is Fenton's
unique version of two early glasses―
Tiffany's Favrile and
Steuben's Blue Aurene. The name Favrene was chosen to
illustrate its roots in these two beautiful glasses. The
challenges involved in creating Favrene glass limits the
production numbers... adding to the rarity and collectibility
of this very special glass. The Favrene batch contains Cobalt
and precious metals. This batch must be worked under exacting
conditions of both heat and oxygen to coax out the silvery
color. Once the base color is established, the piece is then
sprayed with stannous chloride to create the nuances of color
on the glass. Variations of iridescence ranging from gold to
silver to blue result from this spray. Another trip to the
flame creates the permanent satin finish, and our talented
crafted use their reheating skills in this process. Fenton's Favrene was first introduced in the 1991 Connoisseur
Collection. |
